Annual Report Stip-HF 2021
In the spring semester, we still struggled with strict Covid-19 restrictions and hosted most of the events digitally.
We organized two events that were accessible for all PhDs at the University of Bergen. We invited Oddrun Samdal and Margareth Hagen (rector candidates) to participate in a lunch discussion prior to the Rector Elections 2021. The discussion was held in English and over Zoom in March. In April, we hosted a debate with the group B candidates to the University Board.
“Life after PhD: What are our options?” was a theme for our “topic day”, an event that we organize each semester. The event was followed by a workshop “How to get an academic job in Norway and abroad.” The full program of the event is available here -> Program, topic day
Due to the pandemic, we turned our traditional payday drinks into digital payday lunches over zoom. At the end of the semester, we finally managed to meet again in person and hosted a social event (Pizza&Quiz).
In the fall semester, the loosened Covid-19 restrictions allowed us to organize more events in person. We came back to the tradition of hosting payday drinks and organized the first “topic day” not held digitally in almost 2 years. We focused on “What’s the future of PhD education?” and invited both PhDs and PhD coordinators. We also had visitors from the newly founded Stip-SV. The full program of the event is available here – Topic day -21 program 15.11.21.
One of the sessions was a group discussion about the PhD education. The participants got three questions to answer: 1) What do you think the PhD education should accomplish? 2) Do you think the education you have received has done this? Why (not)? 3) What do you wish that you could learn about? The document (Topic day – PhD discussions) includes participants’ answers. Research and Communication. FFU is currently discussing what we can do with the PhD courses at the faculty level – therefore, your comments are particularly useful.
In the fall semester, Stip-HF started regular monthly meetings with Ole Thomassen Hjortland, a newly elected Vice Dean of Research and Communication. This is to discuss ongoing issues and establish better communication between the faculty and PhDs.
To ensure that the faculty democracy is available to all the PhDs at HF, Stp-HF has been hosting open meetings before the faculty board meetings. Everybody is welcome to join and get a summary of the meeting papers and discuss issues that concern them. This is an initiative we would like to continue in the years come.
