What is a writing retreat?

A writing retreat is a set period of time where you put aside all responsibilities of your regular work life and focus only on writing. A writing retreat removes a lot of the really good excuses we place in the path of our writing and creates a container for just that. When participating in the writing retreat, you will work individually on your own text in a group setting structured by a fixed schedule. Furthermore, a writing retreat is an excellent way to connect with new and old colleagues and discover that we’re all in the same boat! We acknowledge that not all PhDs can be away from home in the evening. Therefore, we have decided on hosting this writing seminar close to home, at Høyden.

Topic day on writing abstracts and introductions

On Thursday 7th we will start the day with a session by Laura Saetveit Miles on “Introducing Introductions and Concretizing Abstracts: How to Begin or Summarize Anything”, at 09:00-10:30. For this, please bring TWO of the three following, printed out in hard copy (not digital):

  • The first 2-3 pages of an article or chapter you admire
  • One of your own conference abstracts you’ve submitted (under 300 words)
  • The summary part of a large grant proposal, ideally one that was successful (under 300 words)

We do ask the participants to commit to the full writing retreat, and if there are any pre-obligations you might have, let us know in advance, so we can prepare ourselves accordingly.

The registration deadline is Tuesday, 21 November. NB: There are limited seats (25 people), and we are going for the first-come, first-served principle.
